Non-Free Things

Here's a list of things to do in the neighborhood which charge a fee. But even so, these are all fun, rather unusual New York experiences, so go wild!

Ride a Bike - Metro Bicycles

Supposed to be really fun
Note: Free if you already have a bike. Not free if you need to rent one!

While I haven't done this myself, I have heard from others that it's really fun. I will definitely be doing it sometime this summer.

The bookmark below is for "Metro Bicycles", the closest bicycle rental place that I've found (so far). Note: I've not rented a bike from them.

The image to the left is a close-up of the bike paths in the St. Marks neighborhood. Solid red lines indicate bike paths. Dashed red lines indicate (somewhat) bike-friendly streets. Solid green lines are for the "Greenway", a protected, off-street path which goes (almost) all the way around Manhattan. For the full bike map, go here.  (2006-02-02)

Sing-Sing Karaoke

Fun!
I can review this, 'cause I've actually done it! Sing-sing has a public bar where you can get drinks and a microphone is passed around, and it also has a number of private rooms in the back. For a friend's birthday we rented a room and about a dozen of us all traded off and sang Karaoke for each other. What's amazing is how fabulous some of the singers are!

As far as I can tell, if you're just one or two people, just wander in, sit or stand around the bar, choose a song, and then punch in the numbers. Then, when your song is up, grab the mike and start singing. There's not really a "stage" at the open bar, it's just a regular bar with people sitting or standing and drinking and singing.

PS: I sang "I wish" by Stevie Wonder, and I was absolutely horrible.  (2006-04-08)
