Pedestrian Crash Map |
Frightening |
The size of the circles indicate the number of injuries. Pink circles show an increase in injuries over the prior reporting period (unfortunately, injuries all along St. Marks seem to be increasing). Note the large pink circle at St. Marks and 3rd Avenue. *sigh*, that's just to the right of my building, and yes - it's not a great intersection for pedestrians.
Fatalities are shown with the red dots - which indicate a single fatality. There are three in this image: 10th St. & 1st ave, 9th St. & Avenue A, and 4th street & 2nd Ave.

Community District Profile |
Interesting |
This site gives statistical information on all of New York City's 59 community districts. The St. Marks neighborhood falls within district #3 (in the blue-Manhattan area): "Chinatown, Lower East Side, Two Bridges", about 1.8 square miles with just over 164,000 residents. In case you're interested, this means each residents (of which I presume I am included) is entitled to one patch of land approximately 10x17 feet. I think I'll go out and mark my spot on the sidewalk right now! (2006-02-11)Census Data |
Interesting |
The URL below shows the census data for the "census tract" that I live in (tract number 38). "Family Households" are households (apartments, homes, etc.) where people are living with family - including spouses - and "Non-Family Households" are where people are living alone or with non-relatives.
I think this means that 60+ % of the people in the St. Marks neighborhood are single! And that many are living alone. This squares with what I know about the people living in my apartment building.
