Dallas BBQ |
Good |
Standard Bar-B-Que restaurant, like you'd find anywhere. But having said that, 'Dallas BBQ' has good reliable food, fast service, easy take-out, and a large menu. I've had the ribs, the chicken, and the salads and they've all been good. So, no reason to go out of your way for 'Dallas BBQ', but if you have a hankerin' for BBQ, then this will surely satisfy your need.
Appetizers from $2-8, Salads from $3-9, burgers from $7-11, chicken platters from $5-7, $11 ribs, entres from $10-17. Also has turkey burgers. (2005-07-18)

La Palapa |
Excellent |
Upscale Mexican restaurant. Considerably more expensive than most of the other two-bit Mexican places in St. Marks, but also considerably better.Simple things like the chips and salsa are just wonderful. Guacamole which tastes like fresh avocado, chunky fresh tomato salsa. Lots of dishes using mole sauce. The chicken enchiladas with red mole sauce was excelent.
Or, you can order the tacos and quesadillas separately - they come in small dishes of 2 or 3 items. Recommendation: order several tacos and/or quesadillas to share. I had the chile rubbed roasted chicken tacos and the three cheese quesadilla. Both very good.
$5 tacos (soft), $6 quesadillas, $7-11 appetizers, $15-20 entrees. (2005-11-05)

Caracas Arepa Bar |
Excellent |
An Arepa is a Venezuelan sandwich. Like a pita, but harder and made of corn flour and stuffed with all kinds of wonderful meats, cheeses, and vegetables (esp. avocado and plantains).
The Arepas at Caracas are wonderful - very tasty and very fresh with wonderful spices and ingredients you are unlikely to find elsewhere. Be sure to try the Papelon con limon - it's like tea but with sugar loaf which gives it a smooth creamy taste.
Caracas itself is a charming but tiny hole in the wall, about the size of my apartment living room. I recommend eating at the bar and watching the staff (it's an open kitchen) - all five employees perform a sort of dance as they prepare the food and clean up.
(2006-7-28) Hey! They opened up a full restaurant next door (the hole-in-the-wall is the same, mostly take out, but you can still eat there). Congrats! (2005-09-14)

The Dumpling Man |
Fair |
I wish I could recommend this place. I love the concept, and I love Asian dumplings. Sounds like a match made in heaven?Sadly, no. The filling is rather bland, and the dumplings themselves are gummy.
My recommendation is to stick to the basics: Seared (not steamed) dumplings. Avoid the special sauces. The red sauce (the Marco Polo) is a standard, onion-y Italian sauce - nothing special. The hot sauce (The Monster Sauce) is interesting: kind of a spicy-hot oil, but probably not worth the extra $1.50. But really, just get the standard soy-sesame-vinegar sauce (which you can find on the condiments bar).
Tia's flan was alright, but again, nothing special. But hey, they're really *clean*.
Dumplings 4$ for 6 pieces, 6$ for ten, add $1.50 for special sauce. Flan for $2. (2005-09-25)

Bellos |
Excellent |
But how wrong I was! It's a totally charming Italian restaurant with orange tile walls, movie posters, and lush crooner music. Yes, you can imagine Frank Sinatra feeling right at home. And further, they are clean, with no violation points on their last health inspection. Bravissimo!
And the food was wonderful, with well prepared, tasty dishes. I had the veal sorrento (on special - comes with steamed veggies, thank you and mashed potatoes for about $15) with the ricotta cheese cake. Both were excellent.
I'll definitely be going back.
