Japanese

Sushi, noodle, and yakitory restaurants. There are tons of Japanese restaurants in the St. Marks neighborhood - it's often hard to know where to go. My recommendations:

Go Restaurant

Excellent
Actually, I'm somewhat uncertain of the name - it doesn't seem to exist on the web. But there's a Sushi restaurant right across the street from my apartment, and it's really really good.

I went in worried, because everyone in the restaurant is Japanese (and my experience at Oh Taisho! was somewhat alienating). But they were so friendly! The maitre'd, the wait staff, the sushi chefs, everyone was smiling and very nice. I sat the sushi bar and had an Octopus salad (out of this world), a salmon skin roll (nice and crunchy), and chicken skewers (moist and perfectly cooked). The next time I went in I had the rainbow roll (inside-out roll with different kinds of fish criss-crossing the outside - a work of art) and a Katsu Curry (deep fried chicken, sliced, over rice with a brown sauce). Everything was fresh and delicious.

This place is great anytime, but since the menu is so large (and full of easy-to-eat things like tempura and skewers), I suspect it's especially good for taking friends who may not like sushi very much.  (2005-09-24)

Zen Sushi

Very Good, Reliable
My favorite sushi restaurant in the neighborhood, just a block away from where I live. Less crowded and more friendly than most of the other, "caffeteria style" sushi restaurants. The sushi is always fresh and with nice thick cuts. Special favorites include the spicy tuna role, the Chirasu (when you want more rice), the regular sushi plate, the sushi mania. The appetizers are weird for western tastes. Have not tried the noodles.

Appetizers $4-8, sushi rolls $3.50-5, sushi plates $14-15, dinners $11-16.  (2005-07-12)

Yakitori Taisho (or Oh! Taisho!)

Very good, highly unusual
Okay, so I've never been to a Japanese Yakitori (grilled skewers of meat or vegetables) restaurant before. The minute I stepped into Taisho, I swore I'd been transported to Japan. Everyone speaks Japanese and everyone's very cool-hip-fashionable. Being neither Japanese nor hip, I felt a but self-conscious.

But thankfully, the waiters were able to understand me, and the menus had English subtitles. So I ordered the 10 skewers and they were very good. Grilled, crispy, and tasty.

Skewers are anywhere from $1.25-3.50 each. 10 Skewers Combinations for $12. Some truly bizzare skewers, like chicken skin, gizzards, and whole sardines. Wide variety of other appetizers (which I swear, I'm going to go back and try). Seems expensive, but I often saw people going in and splitting a couple of small dishes.  (2005-07-18)

Soba-ya

Very Good
They bring you an enormous number of menus when you sit down. Two sake menus. An appetizer menu (various small plates of vegetables, fish, or meat - I had duck - excellent), an entree menu (mostly noodle dishes, both hot and cold, and some additional dishes over rice), and another appetizer menu. Later I ordered green tea ice cream from the dessert menu. Whew!

This is primarily a Japanese noodle restaurant, with no sushi rolls. They do have some dishes with raw fish over rice. Best to stick with the noodles, I think (the rice was a bit too sweet for my taste).

Appetizers $6-8, entrees $8-12, sake $6-?.  (2005-07-19)

Sharaku

Very Good
Very good sushi and very good noodles. I was introduced to Sharaku by my collaborator who took me there to eat noodles because we both had colds. Special Recommendation: The Dragon Roll is totally cool and very tasty (if you like avocado, which I do).

$3-5 appetizers, $9-13 entrees, $7-9 noodles, $8-12 Donburi (rice dishes with meat, fish, and/or vegetables), $9-20 sushi/sashimi combinations, $3-7 rolls, 7-11 special rolls.  (2005-09-13)

Hasaki

Very Good
Very good, upscale sushi restaurant. Fast service, great atmosphere, serious and efficient wait staff. I had the Chef's sushi selection - very good. Recommend the Miso Soup, which is an odd thing to recommend, I know. But it's a darker and more substantial soup than the typical watery miso and totally wonderful.

So, this is definitely a good restaurant and worth a visit. I have to say, however, that I prefer Le Miu. The sushi there was better (more creative, and perhaps a tad bit fresher?) for less.

I definitely want to go back and try the Kobe beef, though.

Noodles ($8-10), sushi combinations ($16-40), salads and appetizers ($4-10).  (2006-01-20)

Shiki Sushi

Good, fun
The on-line menus don't show what I thought was the most interesting thing about the menu, namely the unusual roll combinations, some of which have South American influences. The owner (and sush chef) first worked in Mexico before coming to the States. The specialty rolls were enormous. I definitely ordered too much food. Have not tried the "all you can eat" sushi ($18). Maybe someday.

Went back and had the sushi combination B ($17). The tuna was a little limp, but the rest was excellent and very filling.

Also the restaurant is just fun to visit. It is full of paper sculptures. Not like 'standard' origami, these sculptures use scissors to create lacy figures out of cut paper. If you go at the right time, you can watch the owner make them.  (2006-02-04)

Natori

Very Good
I was charmed by this restaurant. First, it has a casual, neighborly feel about it. People chatting and making plans. Second, it feels like you're being served by family (at least when I went, which, admittedly, was at 10pm on a Sunday).

But third, and most important, the meal I had was pretty wonderful. I had the Teriaki sea bass, on special. What was fun is that it came on a series of small plates. First the soup (miso, very generous portion), then a tuna/avocado/lettuce salad, then a tini dish of seaweed salad with a peanut/sessame sauce (very nice), then another small salad with dumplings on the side, then rice, then the fish. And everything for only $15! It was pretty wonderful.

Went back a second time and had the aligator. Tastes like chicken! It's lightly breaded and served with a sweet sauce. Good, but frankly not special enough to go out of your way to try.

Appetizers ($5-7), Soups ($2), Entrees ($10-15), sushi combinations ($10-18), rolls ($3.50-5).  (2006-02-05)

This restaurant is exactly the same as Zen Sushi, the menus are exactly the same. See the Zen Sushi review above.

Ginger

Very Good
Wonderful little sushi restaurant. Everything's good and the sushi is fesh with nice large slices of fish. A cut above (in both quality abd price) of the standard places, but not as upscale as the most expensive places. Full disclosure: the owners are friends of my roommate.  (2007-11-03)
