24 Hour

New York never sleeps and neither do these restaurants. For late-night writers like me it's a god-send!

Yaffa Cafe

Very Good
What a wonderfully colorful place! Step inside and you are assaulted by beads, bright colors, fancy frou-frou, and all manner of excessive decoration. What a pleasure!

I've eaten here several times and have enjoyed it every time. The clientelle is typical East Village. The last time I was there, I heard someone ask (in a nice loud voice for the whole restaurant to hear): "Are you a Lesbian?" Fun! And yes, they will give you a free condom if you ask for it.

And the food is very good too. I've had the chicken curry, the middle eastern platter (humus, tahini, and babaganoush), the tuna melt, and the chicken dijon. All were very good. Brunch is good too. The only thing I might avoid are the pastas (you can get better pasta elsewhere) and the carrot juice (which is nasty - but then again, I hate carrot juice).

$4-6 Soups and appetizers, $8 wraps, $4-7 sandwiches, $8 vegetarian entrees, $12-14 seafood entrees, $9-12 pasta, $2-4 coffee drinks.  (2005-11-08)

Around the Clock

dependable
Typical casual eatery - just a small step above a diner and similar to Dojo (but better) in level and food choices. Typical meals include soups (3$), sandwiches ($6-7), salmon ($11), salads ($3-7), pasta ($7-9), and burgers ($6-7), and breakfast. Many items served with brown rice.

I've had the salmon steak, quesadilla, and chicken noodle soup. They were all fine. Again, not spectacular, but dependable. They have a nice outside eating area which makes eating out quite nice in warm weather.  (2005-11-18)

Virage

Good
Open 24 Hours - thank you! An Italian/American restaurant with more up-to-date and trendy/yuppie fare. My fellow students from the GMTWP would congregate here when we felt like treating ourselves. Contains a smattering of pasta dishes (Hot and Spicy Penne is recommended - my friend actually wrote a play about it), a few entrees (chicken, steak, salmon), and a number of mediterranean dishes (cous cous, Hummus, Octopus, Calamari, etc.). Special recommendation: Sunday Brunch

If you want Italian, go across 7th St. to Via Delle Pace, but if you don't know what you want, then Virage has something for everyone.  (2005-07-19)

Veselka

Good
A Ukranian diner, and wonderful. Went first to have a coffee with a friend, and thought it was a nice place. Yes, it's a diner, but two steps up from dives like The Stage (ps: I love dives, but for different reasons). The atmosphere is more trendy/casual, the waitstaff is charming and they seem to love their jobs.

This time I had the borsht soup and macaroni and cheese. The soup was delicious, a delicate blend of meat and beets. The Mac&Cheese came out in a wide bowl, bubbling! The cheddar cheese was very good.

(2006-7-28) Actually, I've cooled a bit on Veselka. It's good, but 1) they stopped doing counter service. You can sit at the counter, but, akwardly, a waitress behind you takes your order. Strange. And 2) the prices are really out of whack. I mean, $5 for a grilled cheese sandwich?

$3-8 breakfast, $4.50-7 lunch, $8-11 specials, $1 coffee.  (2005-09-26)
