Moishe's Homemade Kosher Bake Shop |
Excellent |
The students at my school love this place so much that several of them have used "Moishe's" in songs that they have written (we're all in the Tisch Graduate Musical Theater Writing program, which is right next door). Mostly I've had their bagels and challah bread - both are excellent. But really, everything is wonderful and high quality. They also serve a 50 cent cup of coffee (small - the only size they offer), an excellent antidote to the ubiquitous Starbucks. (2005-09-13)
Met Market |
Good |
Pretty large selection, fairly good prices. The closest to a typical surburban grocery store that is available in the neighborhood. But don't shop here! If we can convince them to move, then my school will be able to take over their space and use it for more classrooms for the Graduate Musical Theater Writing Program. (2005-09-13)
Porto Rico Importing Co. |
Very Good |
Beans!
As you step into the store, you are literaly assaulted by the smell of coffee beans - it's wonderful and nearly overpowering. What must it be like to work here? Do all your clothes smell like coffee beans?
So yes, this is the perfect place to purchase coffee beans (whole or they will grind them for you) of all kinds of varieties from all places in the world. Canvas sacks sit all over the store, opened with the canvas rolled up to expose the beans within. Very sumptuous.
But, they also sell liquid coffee (and latte, cappucino, espresso, etc.) to anyone who wants it. It's cheaper than Starbucks, but there's no place to sit down inside, and only a small bench outside.
PS: It's right next to the Washington Mutual bank, on St. Marks between 1st and 2nd avenues. (2005-11-03)

Astor Place Wines |
Very Good |
Large, roomy wine store with many excellent selections. My friend (Paul Kim) was amazed to find one of his personal favorite wineries represented (Triennes), although I've had less luck when looking for something very specific (such as a Groffier Chambolle Musigny). I don't know why I always thought this was a Jewish meat market, but it's not. They sell all kinds of meat (including pork), and everything is impeccably clean and everyone is very attentive. The number of staff available to help you is quite amazing, there must have been a half-dozen butchers there to help when I stopped by.
