Greek

Felafel (deep fried croquette, about the size of a golf-ball, made of chickpeas with spices), shawarma (ribbons of sliced meat often put in Pita), and greek salads - yum, and healthy too!

Chickpea

Excellent
Newer, trendier, but also more expensive than the other middle-eastern felafel restaurants in the area. Everything is really good here, from the standards (felafel) to the more creative creations (shawfel - a combination of shawarma and felafel, and the eggplant sandwich). They assemble your order in front of you, so you can choose from a lot of additional toppings - this works great for salads, but it's also a bit too easy to create something that's really expensive. Special recommendation: The Turkey Shawarma is excellent.

Basic recommendation: If you want someplace that's a bit nicer with a better selection, go to Chickpea.

Sandwiches $4-6, salads $5-10. Homemade lemonade $1.25. Note, their web site makes the restaurant look more formal than it really is. You can eat-in, but it's not really a formal sit-down type of restaurant.  (2005-07-24)

Pylos Restaurant

Good
This restaurant may be upgraded to very good when I get the chance to eat here again. My initial impression, however, was lukewarm.

This is the first upscale greek restaurant I've encountered - strange, I know, but all of the other places have been felafel counters or tacky places with enormous menus. And the restaurant interior is beautiful, with a ceiling just chock-a-block full of red clay pots. Cool!

I had the melitzanosalata as an appetizer (cold eggplant mash with onions? and olive oil) and the pastitsio (meet sauce, layered with pasta, silky bechamel, and cheese.

Everything was fine, but I have to say, rather bland and heavy. Maybe it was because of the choices I made - I don't know. Maybe the next time I go I'll find a more compelling reason to return.

Greek comfort foods ($15), sides ($5-6), appetizers ($8-10), salads ($8-10, no side salads, aparently, so best for sharing), entrees ($16-25).  (2006-01-21)

Tasty Falafel N.Y.C.

Very good
This is more of a "standard" Greek carry-out restaurant. Nothing trendy or fancy - in fact, it's something of a dive - but the food's good and fresh.

Special Recommendation: The Lamb Shawarma (Lamb and veggies in Pita) is amazing.

Sandwiches $3.50-4.50, platters $5.50-8.50 (includes salad and a side), salads are $3-5.  (2005-07-18)

Cinderella Felafel

Very Good
Another hole-in-the-wall felafel restaurant. Good quality, inexpensive, reliable. Recommendation: Watch carefully as they make your order. If you have the right server, it can be quite a performance.

Cafe Brama

Very Good
Nice cafe, free wireless (why doesn't everyone do this?) with a delightfully varied menu that makes this place very hard to categorize. Wonderful salads (highly recomended: the St. Marks Salad), excellent tomato soup, Mexican, and various middle Eastern dishes. But lots of small tables means that no one feels out of place with just coffee or tea. Appetizers: 5-10, entrees: 15-20, brunch (very good deal sat. & sun) 12-15.  (2007-11-03)

Kebab Garden

Good
A Greek buffet restaurant with a nice variety of salads, meats, and Greek pastries, all for a price of 7? dollars per pound. Unfortunately, ordering is confusing right off the bat. The very first station has a guy with meets (inc kebabs), from whom you request meat? And are the meats the same price as the rest of the buffet or not? I've never been able to exactly figure it out. Although he doesn't seem that helpful, and everytime I've ordered I've felt like I was doing it wrong, somehow. Also people order sandwiches from him, and so it's all very confusing. Otherwise, the rest of the buffet works like it should, and is quite nice, actually.  (2007-11-03)
