North American

St. Marks has so much ethnic food that you might think there are no American restaurants at all! And yet there are plenty of American restaurants of all types. This category is for any American restaurant that doesn't neatly fit into one of the sub-categories, most likely because their cuisine is unique.

The subcategories are as follows:

Mud

Excellent
Ugly as mud. Orange and brown mud. But great coffee.

This started out as "the Mud Truck", a hideously ugly truck on Lafayette by the Astor Place #6 subway stop. And now, it's a coffee shop on 9th street as well.

It's a fun place. The servers are very chatty and friendly, the coffee is great, and the whole place has a retro feeling. And, of course, it's orange.

They also serve food here. I had the Grilled Chicken Salad (salad with grilled chicken added) with corn, roasted red pepers, cheese - very good.

NOTE: They do not take credit cards! So be sure to have enough cash with you.  (2005-11-03)

9th Street Market

Very Good
Very small and very busy, you may have a difficult time finding a table. But if you can, you are treated to honest home cooking (Southern Style) that's tasty and well prepared. I had the catfish (a featured item) blackened and the Mac&Cheese. Both were wonderful, including the sides (sauteed brussel sprouts and garlic mashed potatoes).

(Went a second time and had the chicken fried steak, arugula salad, and cobbler - everything was excellent)

Go in the winter and enjoy the working fireplace! It's a cozy, nice place.

Appetizers and sides ($5-8), entrees ($15-20), wines by the glass ($8).  (2006-01-25)

Karen's on Astor Place

Excellent
I've eaten here several times, and I always need to remember to go back. It's a wonderful, "healthy eating" place with counter service. Imagine what would happen if health food nuts became business savy and opened up a lunch place. Such is Karen's.

I've had the grilled sandwiches, soups, wraps, cold sandwiches, and salads. Everything was fresh and very good with lots of bean sprouts, shredded carrots, etc. This is one of the best places for vegetarian and vegan food. However, it can be expensive if you're on a budget.

It's also supposed to be a great place for celebrity sightings.

Soups ($3.50-5.50), sandwiches ($5-7), wraps ($6-8), salads ($7/lb), other salads ($5-8), smoothies ($5-6).  (2006-02-04)
